Food Distribution and Cold Storage Challenges

A person in yellow overalls and a face mask moves a blue container with a toxic skull and crossbone warning on the side

THE CHALLENGE

Our food distribution client who works within the cold storage industry must manage high product turnover with strict temperature requirements and tight regulatory standards. As well as this, order fulfilment is expected to be fast and accurate. They found that maintaining real-time visibility of inventory across multiple temperature zones was becoming increasingly difficult as volumes grew.

THE PROBLEM

Our client was relying on manual tracking and disconnected systems. This was resulting in inaccurate inventory counts due to rapid product movement and varying shelf life, temperature-related risks, such as storing products in the wrong zone, slow picking processes, compliance challenges and increased waste and spoilage from poor rotation (FIFO/FEFO).

THE SOLUTION

By implementing the THINK Warehouse Management System, they now have real-time inventory tracking for accurate counts across frozen, chilled, and ambient zones. They have guided picking and putaway which maximises efficiency by sequencing tasks to minimise exposure to cold environments. The built-in FEFO/FIFO rules reduce spoilage by ensuring older or time-sensitive items are shipped first. Traceability and compliance features capture lot/batch information, create audit trails, and enable rapid recall procedures. Finally, analytics and reporting help managers reduce waste, optimise labour, and increase order accuracy. Their operations have become streamlined, product quality has been protected and full compliance has been maintained, all while improving speed and accuracy across the supply chain.
