Soft Drinks Manufacturer Case Study
An established drinks manufacturer from the North East was seeking a 3PL solution for their finished product to include storage and fulfillment.
THINK embraced the challenge to support our 3PL client’s new customer. We were faced with many branded soft drinks products, each with a unique pallet label. Most pallet labels from the manufacturer are Odette style, with embedded bar codes including a combination of Best Before Dates, Batch Numbers, Pallet SSCC code identifiers, bottle / can quantities, Part Numbers, and Expiry Dates.
Approach
Following a full assessment to understand the customer’s specific needs and challenges a WMS was configured to read the various label types, capture the relevant information, and store it against each pallet record. At the picking and despatch stage, this information could be relayed back to both the customer and the manufacturer. For picking, a strict ‘first in first out’ methodology was adopted to ensure stock turnover. Shipment of palletised goods takes place to customers around the country using the 3PL fleet of trucks and transportation function. THINK’s WMS provides on-line access to the current stock levels for the manufacturer.
Outcome
By leveraging the capabilities of a WMS in a 3PL warehouse, the soft drinks manufacturer ensured accurate labelling, efficient storage management, and streamlined order fulfilment operations, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction and optimising supply chain performance.
In my role as Project Manager, I liaised between the 3PL and the drinks manufacturer to ensure the WMS inbound and outbound processes matched customer requirements. The pallet labels had all the information in barcode format to allow scanning at point of receipt and eliminated manual entry of information. It is important for 3PLs to work closely with the WMS provider in advance of storing goods from a new supplier to ensure processes are optimised.
